Special session in memory of Martin L. Weitzman
Friday, 26 June 2020, 15:00-17:00 Berlin time
This session celebrates the career of Martin Weitzman (1942-2019), one of the greatest scholars to have worked in the field of environmental/resource economics. Weitzman made a number of seminal contributions to our field, including his 1974 paper on “prices versus quantities”, his work on discounting the far-distant future using time-declining rates, valuing biodiversity within the framework of the “Noah’s Ark” problem, and “fat tails” in the distribution of impacts of climate change.
The session will begin with reflections on Weitzman’s life and research by Robert Stavins (Harvard) and Gernot Wagner (NYU) [my reflections], followed by presentations of three of the latest papers building on his research on prices and quantities.
This session is hosted by the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, which is planning a special issue in memory of Weitzman.
